What belongs in your bucket?

Use this quick guide when you are sorting kitchen scraps. When in doubt, leave it out and ask us.

What you can compost

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Coffee grounds*
  • Tea leaves
  • Eggshells
  • Bread and pasta
  • Oats, rice, and other grains
  • Nuts and nut shells
  • Herbs
  • Houseplants and cut flowers
  • Other plant-based kitchen scraps

Things you can’t compost

  • Meat, fish, and seafood
  • Dairy products
  • Compostable plastics, paper, and cups
  • Produce stickers and packaging
  • Glass and metal
  • Excess oils and grease
  • Pet waste and diapers
  • Liquids and chemicals
  • Anything labeled non-compostable
  • Food scraps still inside packaging

* We cannot accept compostable paper, including coffee filters, because it can blow away when the compost is turned.
